Abstract

There has been many investigations on phytoagglutinins and especially, Moon et al reported a number of research works on phytoagglutinins prepared from the Korean plants. The present communication describes biological effects of 15 Korean phytoagglutinins to microorganism for the first time. Terminalia chebula Retzius induced agglutination of Staph. aureus, Ps. aeruginosa, Prot. vulgaris, B. subtilis, Sal. typhi, C. albicans and Sa. cerevisiae but Polygonum areiculare L. showed only agglutination of Prot. vulgaris. Their agglutinating titers were ranged from 50 to 500. Terminalia chebula Retzius had bactericidal action to Ps. aeruginosa, Sal. typhi and Sa. cerevisiae, however Polygonum areiculare L. did not show such action to Prot. vulgaris. Above findings suggest that Terminalia chebula Retzius can be developed as a bactericidal agent.
